Fluerty Girl Helps Gulf Coast – Update

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

On April 20, 2010, an explosion rocked the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. On the rig 11 men lost their lives and many were injured. The explosion triggered a massive oil leak 5,000 feet below the waters surface. Currently, the oil is effecting every state on the Gulf Coast. It has completely halted the fishing and seafood industries. The ripple effect of people being impacted by this spill is staggering.

Some of the most gut-wrenching images from the Gulf Coast are of pelicans and sea turtles covered in oil. They are just two of the many species struggling to survive. The full impact of this spill will not be known for quite some time. The good news is that in the wake of tragedy there are people that are trying to make a difference.

Here in New Orleans, Fleurty Girl, is doing her part to help the oil ravaged sea turtles by creating the RESCUE ME t-shirt design in conjunction with the Audubon Institutes’s Louisiana Marine Mammal & Sea Turtle Rescue Program (LMMSTRP). LMMSTRP is the only organization authorized to rescue marine animals affected by the oil spill in Louisiana. This is a limited-edition shirt with 100% of the net proceeds going straight to LMMSTRP.

The shirt is on 100% combed organic cotton and printed using soy oil-based inks. The shirts are available for $20 and come in kids, ladies, and universal fit. Be aware that the ladies size does run a tad small so it’s wise to order a size up. Click here to order your limited edition shirt.

UPDATE: On June 18, 2010 Fleurty Girl’s owner, Lauren, presented the LMMSTRP with a check for $17,325.00. A ceremony was held at the Aquarium of the Americas in downtown New Orleans. The donation will be used to rescue, rehabilitate and release sea turtles and other marine animals back into the wild.

In addition to the RESCUE ME shirt, Fleurty Girl is a New Orleans favorite making shirts with yatitude! She is dedicated to producing quality shirts that highlight the things that make New Orleans special. Do you wash your dishes in a “zink”? Did you grow up in Met Tree? And do you know what not eating the straight ones mean? If you can answer these questions then you are a true New Orleanian!

  1. I saw in the corner of my eye Fleurty Girl as I was submitting my WW. I had to go back and see what was posted about Lauren. I first met her when she lived in Denham Springs, when she started out of her house.
And then quickly she moved back to N.O. and now has three shops, wow. I love her stuff!
